The Climate Change Bill
The Government's draft Climate Change Bill - leading to legislation by Easter 2008 - was out to public consultation during 2007 and is an historic step forward in managing the reality of climate change. No other country has taken such a step and legislation will set targets to reduce carbon emissions and hold Ministers legally accountable for their achievement.
Chair of the Society, John Brady, said, "The Society welcomes the draft Climate Change Bill. It marks the new political significance of climate change building on the warnings of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and of Sir Nicholas Stern in his report on the economics of climate change. However, we hope that emissions targets, and the proposed carbon budgets, will be backed by action to change the behaviour of people and business for a joined-up approach to mitigation and adaptation. Chartered Environmentalists span many disciplines and are ideally placed to deliver mitigation and adaptation strategies."
The Society has submitted a detailed response to the draft Climate Change Bill drawing on the expertise of its constituent bodies and Chartered Environmentalists.
