It is the International Biodiversity Day tomorrow. I sometimes struggle to understand the complexity of biodiversity issues so I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered this link http://www.pdfgeni.com/book/Ecosystem-services-pdf.html to a whole range of very interesting and insightful papers. I hope you find them useful too.

Tomorrow will be a good opportunity for Chartered Environmentalists to reflect on the importance of biodiversity and the role that their particular profession has in preserving or preventing further deterioration of biodiversity.

I have been following the events off the coast of the United States after the tragic destruction of the deep sea oil rig in the Mexican Golf. It appears that the complexity of an impact like the one we are witnessing was not fully understood, appreciated an analysed before we embarked on that particular industrial process. It is likely to have devastating impacts on biodiversity.

It raises the issue of whether we understand the risks of what we embark on well enough, particularly the risks associated with an impact on biodiversity. Understanding risks around sustainability needs well informed environmentalists and we should share our knowledge and discuss among the professions. SocEnv will play its role in doing this.
