Background

SocEnv is made up of fifteen professional bodies and learned societies, representing over 200,000 practitioners working in a wide range of professions.

Governed by a board comprised of two representatives from each of its member bodies, those nominated serve on the Society’s committees and working groups. Through its Registration Authority, the Society administers the internationally recognised professional qualification for environmental practitioners, Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv).

Eight professional bodies came together to form the fledgling Society for the Environment in 2002. By the granting of our Royal Charter in 2004, the number had risen to ten:

  • Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM)

  • Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM)

  • Institution of Agricultural Engineers (IAgrE)

  • Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE)

  • Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)

  • Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (IEEM)

  • Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA)

  • Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES)

  • Institute of Fisheries Management (IFM)

  • Institution of Water Officers  (IWO)

Since 2004, thirteen more professional insitutions have been joined the SocEnv community.

The Institution of Professional Soil Scientists (IPSS) is an Associate Member of the Society.

The full member and associate bodies each have a record of special achievements and pre-eminence in their field, and the work and identity of all the our member bodies remain uncompromised. In line with our inclusive approach, we seek to admit more bodies over time.
