Moving to an Ecological Economy…True Valuing of Biodiversity
How can ecology, not economics, drive the valuing of biodiversity and our natural resources? With continuing loss of biodiversity, over use of natural resources, climate change, growing urbanisation, food shortages, increasing fuel prices, how do we measure and take account of the true value of biodiversity? What are the ecological indicators that can be used to do this? How can they be measured by ecological practitioners in the same way that financial indicators are assessed by auditors? What monitoring is required?
For this conference IEEM has brought together key speakers to consider these very important issues.
Peter Head Project Director, Arup, will give the keynote presentation on Manufacturing, agriculture and urbanism in the transition to the ecological age. Peter is responsible for implementing China’s plans to build a demonstration eco-city, which will ultimately house 500,000 people, a project Arup hopes will be a model for the world.
Sir John Harman, will present his thoughts on how ecology, not economics, must drive the valuing of biodiversity and our natural resources.
Dr Mike Christie, from the University of Aberystwyth, will present the very interesting study being undertaken for Defra on Valuing the UK Biodiversity Action Plan.
Dr Dominic Moran will present the findings from Valuing UK marine biodiversity affected by nature conservation proposals within the Marine Bill. This is a key piece of research for Defra, Natural England and JNCC and being undertaken by Scottish Agricultural College.
David Calpin will present Defra’s recently launched Securing a healthy natural environment: an action plan for embedding an ecosystems approach. This action plan sets a new strategic direction for government policy on the natural environment.
Morgan Parry from WWF Wales will consider the challenges posed by a possible Severn Barrage. How does Government intend to fully evaluate the biodiversity value of the Severn Estuary? Will their ‘accounting’ give the true value of the biodiversity affected? What are the indicators that can be used to truely value the biodiversity that could be affected?
Paul Goriup will look from the practitioner’s side, from his work that utilises the resources of the ethical investment movement for promoting ecologically sustainable development and wise use of natural resources, especially in Eastern Europe. Since 1999, FIELDFARE has undertaken investment in four projects in the Lower Danube region of Ukraine.
Brian Czech from the Centre for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy will consider the conflict between economic growth and conservation and policies for a steady state economy.
Vineta Goba, the Business and Biodiversity Programme Manager, will present the work of the ECNC bringing together business and biodiversity.
