EPF letter to the new Environment Secretary

solar energy

We’re sure you will agree that the coming years are integral to delivering on the government’s commitment, to leave the environment in a better state than that in which we found it. This includes delivery of mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), our ambitious legally binding environmental targets and national commitment to reach net zero by 2050... The commitments listed above (among others) are welcomed, but effective delivery of these commitments must now follow.

From the EPF letter

Summary

In November 2023, SocEnv supported the Environmental Policy Forum (EPF) open letter to the new Environment Secretary, The Rt Hon Steve Barclay MP, summarising our key policy asks for the coming year, and within the Conversative party manifesto for the upcoming general election.

Seven Institutions in total signed up in support of the response, representing professionals working across the profession (SocEnv) and in sectors such as ecology, health, resource management, the built environment, fisheries and environmental sciences.

In the letter we argue that effective delivery of the government’s environmental commitments can only be achieved by prioritising the following:

  • Investment in green skills
  • Adopting a consistent, joined-up approach
  • Consultation with the experts
