CEnv Profile for Rory Henderson CEnv | Head of Net Zero at Rand Associates

Rory’s career to date

I started my career as a Stock Condition Surveyor after completing an MSc in Commercial Building Surveying. I progressed to working for national surveying consultancies as a Project Manager overseeing large surveying projects. I then worked with Liverpool City Council surveying their corporate stock and managing minor works to schools before working directly for a housing association on the Wirral focussing on their asbestos management. Whilst in these roles I’d become a member of RICS and was producing Home Buyer Surveys and Energy Performance Certificates for private clients.

Following a move to Devon I worked as the Head of Surveying for a large South West based housing provider and then took the lead on projects addressing the sustainability of their existing stock.

I currently work for Rand Associates as their Head of Net Zero. This is an emerging and dynamic role which sees me developing our sustainability offering. We are now able to offer a suite of services such as Sustainability and Net Zero Strategies, Retrofit Assessments/Retrofit Coordination etc, and other sustainability services which have a significant amount of synergy to the existing work that Rands offer our clients.

Looking ahead

We simply don’t have enough trained and experienced resources to deliver the national sustainability agenda. Therefore, my goals are to develop a strong and effective team of sustainability professionals to support the work we are currently doing and to provide coaching and encouragement to new entrants into the industry to help fill the skills gap.

I’ve also just started as a SocEnv assessor. We need more people to work within our sector and I’d like to think that I can contribute towards this. In addition, I’m an RICS Counsellor and have started to work with local colleges to promote the industry and I’m very keen to provide guidance to people looking to start or develop their careers in surveying.

Rory’s words of advice for prospective Chartered Environmentalists

If like me you are keen to demonstrate your professional commitment and environmental knowledge and experience, I would encourage you to pursue CEnv registration. I found the process of gaining CEnv very straightforward and easy to navigate. It was nowhere near as arduous as similar process that I’d gone through.
